Thanks for your comment, Obi-Mom. 8-)

If you like to swim, summer is the best time to visit, but that's also when the most other tourists are around. In fact, capacity at the pond is limited - the beach area is pretty small - so if you get there "too late" in the morning, you have to wait until about 3 in the afternoon to be allowed in.

If you just want to visit and maybe dip some toes in the water, October would be beautiful. Early October would be warmer, later October would have more color.

Keep in mind that the original cabin no longer exists; they've found where it was, but the wood was used long ago for something else. (Recycling!) You can hike to the site and toss a stone on a big pile of remembrance stones - some people paint messages on them for loved ones, etc.

As you know, we're lousy with early American historical sites up here. One that often goes unnoticed, though, is Old Yorke, Maine. I took the kids on a group field trip there, and it was fantastic. The staff made sure everything had a hands-on component for the kids. I don't know what it would be like if you just dropped by for the day, but the organized field trip was terrific.

Ah, the over-planned first year. I remember it well. Thanks for including the pictures. I never knew Walden Pond was so beautiful. I wish I'd made the trip out to see it when Padawan Learner and I were last in MA. I'm thinking we might need to take a "field trip" this year as we're planning to learn about early US history... Do you have a seasonal recommendation for a visit to the cabin?

Hey Lori! Great to meet you last night! Small small world, I used to be the camp nurse at Rolling Ridge way back in another life time. I wonder if you attend the UU church in North Andover? My sister, Barbara was a member until she moved to Marlborough. My former brother and sister in law, Rodney and Kristen Hollenbeck used to have a LOT to do with Rolling Ridge. Since I have not been a part of that family for more than a decade I don't know if they still are. Anyhoo. . . small small world. LOVE your blog btw.

I couldn't have found this post at a more opportune time, thank you. I've been wanting to teach some basic programming to my almost 7 year old twins and didn't know where to start. I think that Storytelling Alice is going to be a good place for us to get started.

I have added your blog to my google reader as I have been finding your blog most enjoyable reading.

I hope you don't mind but I included this post in the 2nd edition of The Carnival of Cool Homeschoolers. . I thought that if I found this information cool, other homeschoolers would as well.

You have so much to say that is truly interesting. You should consider submitting more posts to the carnival.
